Travelling to Russia is an exciting experience — and while border formalities may seem daunting, they’re usually straightforward if you’re well-prepared.
If you already have a valid Russian visa or a passport allowing visa-free entry, there is no need to worry. Upon arrival, you will go through the standard passport checks and, if applicable, visa checks at the border. As part of this process, border officers will also collect your biometric data — including a photograph and fingerprints — which is a routine procedure for all foreign visitors.
What Questions Might Be Asked
During the process, the border officer may ask you a few questions about:
- The purpose of your visit;
- The length of your stay;
- Your accommodation in Russia;
- Your return travel plans.
If you have not booked a tour and are travelling independently — for instance, if you only obtained a visa through us — be ready to say where you’ll be staying and whom you’re visiting (for example, a girlfriend, friends, or relatives). You may also be asked to provide the exact address of your accommodation, so make sure you have it written down or easily accessible.
There’s no reason to feel nervous — simply answer honestly and clearly, and the process should go smoothly.
Additional Checks for Some Nationalities
Travellers from visa-free countries or those eligible for electronic visas normally pass through border control quickly. However, travellers from certain countries — particularly the UK and the USA — may occasionally experience longer checks. Don’t be alarmed if the border officer takes your passport and asks you to wait. Based on our experience, this additional screening can sometimes take a few hours.
We understand it can feel frustrating, but unfortunately, there’s no way to speed up the process or to know exactly how long it will take. This is routine and nothing to worry about — it does not mean there’s a problem with your documents or your visa.
Final Reassurance
Please rest assured that all our travellers successfully enter Russia. If a transfer is included as part of your programme, our team will monitor your arrival closely, and your local guide or driver will be waiting for you after you clear the border, regardless of any delays.
So stay calm, be patient, and look forward to the journey that awaits you in Russia.
